Transients in pressure-imposed shearing of dense granular suspensions

چکیده
Granular materials whether dry or immersed in fluid show dilation compaction depending upon the initial conditions, solid fraction and normal stress. Here we probe transient response of a dense granular suspension subjected to change applied stress under simple shear. In this aim, normal-stress-imposed discrete element particle simulations are developed considering contributions arising from drag induced on particles by phase. These pressure-imposed behaviors suspensions such as before reaching steady state following µ( J ) rheology. Less expectedly, behavior, particular height system function strain, can also be described assuming that follows rheology at all times.

ii Acknowledgments A lot of people contributed to this thesis in different ways. First, I would like to thank Prof. Matthias Fuchs for the opportunity to work under his supervision. I profitted enormously from his instructions and our discussions. He was always available when I needed help. I also thank him for being very exacting concerning my results, which forced me to optimize my arguments ...
متن کاملGranular Segregation in Collisional Shearing Flows
This paper considers segregation in collisional granular shearing ows from the experimental, computational, and theoretical standpoints. We focus on a phenomenon of segregation where the separation of grains by size or mass is driven by spatial gradients in the uctuation energy of the grains. We report experiments carried out in microgravity with a shear cell shaped as a race track and containi...

As dense granular materials are sheared, a shear band and an anisotropic force network form. The approach to steady-state behavior depends on the history of the packing and the existing force and contact network. We present experiments on shearing of dense granular matter in a 2D Couette geometry in which we probe the history and evolution of shear bands by measuring particle trajectories and s...
متن کاملCollapsing granular suspensions.
A 2D contact dynamics model is proposed as a microscopic description of a collapsing suspension/soil to capture the essential physical processes underlying the dynamics of generation and collapse of the system. Our physical model is compared with real data obtained from in situ measurements performed with a natural collapsing/suspension soil. We show that the shear strength behavior of our coll...
متن کاملMean-field model of layering instability in shearing suspensions.
Concentrated suspensions may shear thin when the suspended particles form planar sheets that slide over one another with less friction than if the particles are randomly distributed. In a naive model the suspension is described by a mean effective viscosity and particles that collide with each other redistribute the mean density in the shearing direction. This leads to a diffusion equation for ...
